Suleiman The Magnificent

Hi all!

Are you fans of the Turkish series Harim Al Sultan? History teacher Imad Mourad joined us today and went into details about the life of Sultan Suleiman.

Sultan Suleiman I was the only son of Sultan Selim I and at  the early age of 26 he became the the 10th Sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

Known as Suleiman The Magnificent or Suleiman The Lawgiver, Sultan Suleiman completely reconstructed the Ottoman legal system. Under his rule, the Ottoman fleet dominated the seas from the Mediterranean to the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf.

Many buildings and monumental architectural developments were constructed during his reign such as Süleymaniye mosque. The port of Golden Horn, of which the surveillance was made from Galata Tower, became one of the busiest ports.

Sultan Suleiman was infatuated with Huyam, a harem girl from Ruthenia. She was the daughter of an Orthodox priest, captured by Tatars, sold as a slave in Constantinople and rose through the ranks of the Harem to become Suleiman’s favorite and later his wife.

Tune in next week to know more about the infatuation of the Sultan Suleiman with Huyam.

Love,
